About Carbohydrates

Are Carbs Bad for you?

Oh, carbs. The macronutrient that everyone seems to love to hate. You hear it all the time, “carbs are bad for you”, “cut out carbs to lose weight”, “carbs are the devil’s food”.

But is it really that simple?

As a personal trainer, let me tell you the scientific truth about carbs.

What is a Carbohydrate?

First of all, let’s define what carbs are. Carbohydrates are one of the three macronutrients that provide energy for the body. They come in two forms: simple and complex. Simple carbs are found in sugary foods and drinks, while complex carbs are found in foods like whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

Are Carbs Bad for you?

Now, to answer the question at hand: are carbs bad for you? The answer is a resounding no! Carbs are not inherently bad for you. In fact, they are necessary for optimal bodily function. Carbs provide energy for the body, including the brain, which requires glucose (a simple carb) to function properly.

Difference Types of Carbs, the Good, the Bad

However, not all carbs are created equal. Simple carbs, like those found in candy and soda, can lead to rapid blood sugar spikes and crashes, which can leave you feeling sluggish and irritable. Complex carbs, on the other hand, provide sustained energy and are packed with important vitamins, minerals, and fibre.

So, why do carbs get such a bad reputation? Well, it’s because people tend to over consume simple carbs and not enough complex carbs. When you eat a diet high in simple carbs and low in complex carbs, it can lead to weight gain and an increased risk for chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Changing your “Carbospective”

But here’s the thing: it’s not the carbs themselves that are the problem…

It’s the way we eat them.

Instead of demonizing all carbs, focus on incorporating more complex carbs into your diet. That means choosing whole grain breads and pastas, brown rice, quinoa, sweet potatoes, and plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Carbs are not bad for you. They are an essential part of a healthy diet. It’s all about choosing the right kind of carbs and eating them in moderation. So go ahead and enjoy that sweet potato, guilt-free!
